(Our fight with mold story and more mold removal tips!)

  • 1/2 gallon household vinegar
  • 1/4 gallon of water
  • 1/3 cup of baking soda
  • 1/3 cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/3 cup alcohol
  • 15- 20 drops all natural tea tree oil
Each ingredient has properties that eliminate different kinds of common
household mold and mold spores!

Note: This recipe and directions for clean up of small mold problems. For medium to large problems please consult a professional mold removal company if desired.

Before you start: Make sure to wear safety goggles, an air mask with an N95 rating and gloves (although all ingredients are generally safe, please refer to the safety labels on each ingredient) The safety goggles, mask and gloves are to protect you against mold spores that might escape into the air and mix with the dust in your home.

  • Mix ingredients well.
  • Use spray bottle or pump sprayer and apply solution to moldy or moist spots in your house.
  • Let soak and dry for 1 hour.
  • Use a shop- vac with HEPA Filter (High Efficiency Particulate Filter) to vacuum where you sprayed.
  • Note that only a HEPA filter will prevent mold spores from blowing back out of the shop- vac into your home.
  • When removing mold make sure air is NOT blowing directly on the moldy area. (like a fan, heating or cooling system) to keep mold spores from spreading around in your home.
  • To prevent further mold growth, reapply a thin layer of Anti-Mold solution to the area and let dry completely before blocking or sealing the area.
  • Wipe the area around the affected spot clean to prevent any mold spores that have escaped into your home.
  • Ventilate the area preferably with outside air before and after treating for mold (open the windows).

HOW and WHY we created this recipe:

We created this non-toxic mold removal recipe after our basement flooded in summer of 2018. Seriously, 6+ inches of water in your basement is bad news!) The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) states that mold growth can occur in wet areas in as little as 24 hours. Symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints. Our entire basement needed to be properly cleaned and mold spores needed to be removed ASAP!

We did not want to hire a company that would spray harmful chemicals in our living environment. We know that even after those chemicals are sprayed and the building is deemed "safe",  toxins adhere to dust and other surfaces in your home and can off gas for months. We did not want our family to breathe TOXIC AIR in our own home! We did the research and found that the ingredients in the recipe we created kill all different types of molds. We have created an all around mold killing non-toxic product.

After removing all of our furniture, wet carpet, drywall and insulation we were ready to test our recipe on walls, floors and wood studs. We did find some mold in the walls from a previous (not quite as extreme) flood. After using our new recipe, vacuuming, ventilating and drying the rooms (using a vacuum with a HEPA filter, fresh air and fans) all the mold had disappeared!! The basement did not smell moldy, mildewy or musty. On the contrary, it smelled fresh and clean! We let the treated areas dry completely for a few days before we began replacing the insulation, drywall and flooring. Now that the basement is finished, we can get back to building our healthy, sustainable, efficient tiny-home in a BUS!  Check it out our SCHOOL BUS CONVERSION in the link above.

MORE FACTS and SIMPLE TIPS to AVOID MOLD GROWTH in your HOME:
  • Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.
  • Mold needs moisture to grow!
  • The key to keeping areas mold free is to keep things well ventilated.
  • Do not be afraid to open your windows for a few minutes (EVEN IN THE HOT SUMMER OR WINTER MONTHS). Letting fresh air into your living environment can do wonders for your health!
  • Installing an energy efficient (Energy Star rated) dehumidifier in your home and running it on humid days will also keep moisture from forming where it shouldn't be. Air moisture levels to prevent mold growth should be between 30% and 60%.
  • Vacuum and wipe the ventilation / exhaust fan intake in your bathroom and kitchen as often as possible to prevent dust from building up and blocking it from working properly. Make sure it is ventilating to the outside (not in your attic).
  • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
  • Clean mold off hard surfaces and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
  • Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  • Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
  • In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).

Do you have mold or mildew stains? Try this!

Baking soda is mildly abrasive, so it's ideal for scrubbing away the remnants of mildew and mold. It works especially well in tough spots like grout, where mildew can leave stains behind even after it's killed. Make a paste out of baking soda and water and simply work it into the surface with a scrub brush or sponge. Rinse with white vinegar to eliminate the white residue that baking soda leaves behind.

Common yet unexpected placed you can find mold in your home.
  • Any surface where cold air meets warm air. For example: window sills and doorways. Tip: remove window screens in the winter to encourage better ventilation.
  • In, on and under the kitchen and bathroom sinks, baths and showers.
  • Wooden cutting boards
  • Behind your stove and refrigerator
  • On your mattress or box spring.
  • Behind any piece of furniture that is pushed up against an outside wall.
